Free Pub Quiz Questions

Five types of pub quiz formats.

Article by Monika Crann

Creating a pub quiz needs to have a lot of thought put it. Difficulty level, topics, and the amount of quiz rounds are all important parts to a quiz.

Standard Format. Standard format of a pub quiz is a set number of rounds, usually 4 or 5, often contain a handout round. A set of general knowledge quiz is usually the focus of the quiz with at least 50% of the quiz having various trivia questions. To set one up, you firstly need to pick the amount of rounds you want (usually about 5). Then write or buy for 2 or 3 of the sets of tens questions. Now select what kind of handout round you want. The most common being a picture quiz, but taglines, anagrams and small story boards are becoming very popular. Themed Format. Similar to the Standard pub quiz, but with the focus of the general knowledge questions being about the important date or event. Common themes are based around Christmas, Halloween, Valentines and St Patrick day. Usually the handout round is a picture with the whoever or whatever disguised with the clothing which relates to the theme, such as celebrities with a Santa beard on. Rounds Table Format. Round table format is a lot more relaxed with the quizzes given out as handouts rounds. They are a selection of quizzes such as handout rounds, anagrams and taglines. They can be handed out or you can leave one on the table and include them as one of the rounds of a normal pub quiz. First hand them out then mark them and give a fresh one out. Round table quizzes are excellent option for a couple times a week and you can do free ones with no prizes just leave them on the actual table or you can do them with prizes and entry fee. These are coming back as being popular and are perfect if you don’t have a competent quiz master. Story board Format. Story boards are relatively old, but new with regards to pub quizzes. You may remember doing these at school having a passage and then having to fill in the blanks from either a preselected list or your own general knowledge. A story board pub quiz can be handout rounds solely but are more fun to be read out by a quiz master with the answers being given out at the beginning. You have to have firm rules that everyone understands before starting this type of quiz otherwise you’ll be spending ages repeating yourself which loses the appeal. Read slowly and carefully pause to allow people to think before moving onto the next part of the passage. Cryptic Format. Cryptic formats again are becoming more popular. This is where mystery in the clues to link to the answer. Quiz rounds are usually 4 or 5 questions as they take longer to get and sometimes a prize is given for the one who gets it first but becomes a bit messy and time consuming. If thinking of doing a cryptic pub quiz be sure to have less questions per rounds

quiz general knowledge questions and answers thousands of free quiz questions with answers for you to choose from when cmpiling your next pub quiz or quiz night.

How to Run A Pub Quiz – 6 Steps to Success

Article by Nick Moseley

Whether you’re planning a fun or “serious” money making pub quiz you’ll want to do it right so that people actually turn up to play and if they do you don’t look like a complete donkey by way of bad organisation or even worse having out of date questions! It’s not that hard when you know how, and after you read thorough the 6 key steps you’ll know exactly what to do to make your pub quiz a rip roaring success.

If you just want to run a simple quiz between friends and/or work mates then this is still relevant but you don’t need to go into as much detail.

Summary of the 6 steps -1. Design your quiz structure.2. Get questions.3. Teams and entry fees4. Prizes5. Rolling jackpots – A great way to get them back again and again.6. Advertise your quiz

1) Design your Quiz structure:

Most quizzes last 1 to 1 and half hours and have 6-8 rounds (toilet and drink breaks essential!)

>> First – Outline a base structure.

* Basic – Sets of general knowledge trivia questions per round.

* Advanced ->> Specialist rounds like music or movies.

>> Or a seasonal/event theme, E.g., Xmas, big sports events, national days, Mothers Day etc.

>> Different formats: For example, a picture quiz round or “name that tune!

2) Get Questions:

>> Now slot question groups into the structure.

Questions must be -* Up to date in the context of the subject they’re on

* Answers MUST be correct. Take particular care with any questions where answers change over time, e.g., which driver has won the FI season the most etc.

* If you have a wrong answer as a quizmaster you’ll lose credibility fast and the whole thing will be a nightmare!

Happily the solution is easy.

>> Where to get quiz questions

* Free – Online or with books and newspapers finding questions and answers (good if you like that sort of thing or have lots of time)

Free trivia quiz question packs – Search online and you’ll find sets of free questions for download. But DO check answers on any questions where the answer could have changed with time passing.

Pay for questions – There are specialist quiz question companies who supply pre-researched, guaranteed correct questions. Costs vary but are not that high – Plus you know you’re getting professional quality.

If you’re in a hurry or want to do a themed quiz or one with extras like a picture quiz then this is by far the best way.

3) Teams and Entry fees:

I suggest no limit low or high on team numbers.

An entry fee is a good idea as otherwise some people may not focus well and bring the whole thing down. I suggest

Halloween Quiz Questions for a Great Pub Quiz

Many people are seeking Halloween quiz questions around this time of year. In fact, most pubs run a pub quiz at certain times of the year and Halloween quizzes are particularly popular – if compiled correctly. The problem with most quizzes is that they are not put together very well, and competitors either get bored part of the way through and stop bothering, or they complete it but likely do not to return next year.

Both of these are true! People do get bored during certain types of pub quiz, they do stop playing and others do complete the quiz and they do fail to turn up next year. Why is this, and what is it that makes them feel that way when many others seem to be enjoying themselves?

It is actually a question of balance. If you aren’t interested in celebrities, and you don’t know your Hello from your OK, then if a quiz is packed full of questions on celebs by a quizmaster that needs to get a life, then of course a lot of people will walk away and not be back next year.

Others think it great to hand out ream after ream of pictures of celebrities to be identified – mine would make good paper to light the fire, but that’s about all and many would join me.

Nope, for a Halloween quiz you need genuine Halloween trivia questions that most people will enjoy asking or guessing. The harder questions can be compiled as a ‘true or false’ round, where you at least have a 50% chance of getting the correct answer. None should be impossibly hard, and everybody should have a fair chance of being able to answer every question.

Contrary to what many amateur quiz compilers would appear to believe, a Halloween Quiz is not a competition between the quizmaster and the competitors.

Were that the case, I would win every time! In fact, as a professional quiz compiler, I do win every time, because my objective is to entertain everybody and have them leave the venue happy, knowing that they have done their best and answered more questions than they thought they would have.

If you see an advert for a Halloween Quiz near you then give it a go. You never know your luck. They are great fun, and if compiled properly should be totally on the topic of Halloween. If you are a pub owner or bar manager, or if you run a hostel or hotel, or any other place where Halloween trivia questions can be asked, a Halloween Quiz is likely to draw in a lot of people, particularly from about two weeks prior to Halloween to the day after.

After that you have to wait for another year, but it’s amazing how people forget questions, so a year later all you might have to do is to add a few more topical questions and ask them all over again. They will all go home happy again, and then next year . . .

More information on how to run a Halloween Quiz can be found on Pete’s website Quiz Guy where you will how to make your own Halloween Quiz, or how to buy one.

Question by : How Irish do you think you are?
So many people ask questions like ‘I have one Irish grandparent does that make me Irish?’

Irishness isn’t about blood, its about having a real cultural connection to this lovely island and its people.

I do apologise to people across the border for the southern bias of the quiz, i should have thrown a question relevant to the North.
Alan, I know how you feel about the south but didn’t realise that you had such different names for common clothing and food items. I recognise some of the items do have a southern bias, but your answer is just your typical nay-saying.
For the sake of inclusiveness :)
